Resume outline Template
Draft it on paper, before the formatting starts eating the afternoon.
Four steps
How to print a resume outline
- 1
Start from this form
Opens on the resume outline: Name, Role you want, Summary: two sentences, what you do and for whom, Experience, most recent first and the rest.
- 2
Put your own heading on it
Replace "Resume Outline" with a name, a business or a date range.
- 3
Set the row height
15 rows at 6 mm fits more in; 14 mm suits a form filled in by hand.
- 4
Print or save as PDF
The two-sentence summary, hard as it is is the line to get right.
Who prints this
Anyone starting a resume from nothing, and anyone whose current one has grown by accretion across ten years.
The field that decides whether it works
The two-sentence summary, hard as it is. Everything below it becomes easier to cut once you know what the resume is arguing.
Why it is laid out this way
Structure first and wording second, which is the opposite of the way a word processor makes you work. A weak resume is nearly always a structure problem, and the blocks here are sized so an over-long section is obvious before it is ever typed.
What is on the sheet
6 sections, in this order: Name, Role you want; Summary: two sentences, what you do and for whom; Experience, most recent first; Skills and tools worth naming; Education and training; a note. Set the row height anywhere between 6 and 14 mm across its 15 ruled rows, put your own heading at the top, and find the resume outline alongside 4 other forms on the job search templates page.
