The arithmetic behind a wrap-around label
A wrap-around label is the only one where the size is not a matter of taste. The bottle has a circumference, and the label either fits it or it does not. Multiply the diameter by 3.14 to get the distance round, then take roughly 10 mm off for the gap.
A 500 ml water bottle is about 68 mm across, so it is about 213 mm round, and the label here is 203 mm. The temptation is to size the label to meet itself exactly, and it is worth resisting. Bottles are not perfectly round, printers are not perfectly accurate, and hands are not perfectly steady. A label that is supposed to meet will overlap on most bottles, and the overlap makes every small misalignment obvious. A deliberate gap at the back looks intentional.
Printing and sticking
- Matt self-adhesive sticker paper for anything that will be handled. Gloss shows fingerprints on a bottle that gets passed round a table.
- Ordinary paper and a glue stick is fine for a party favour that only has to last one evening, and is much cheaper for fifty bottles.
- Ice buckets need vinyl. Condensation will lift and pucker paper within minutes. A laser printer on vinyl sticker paper is the only combination that reliably survives it; inkjet ink will run.
- Print one and check it against the actual bottle before committing the rest of the sheet. This costs one label and saves the other seven.
