Paper is the point

These are the documents that fail when they live on a screen. An emergency contact sheet is needed by whoever is standing in the kitchen, not by whoever owns the phone. A sitter sheet is needed by someone who does not have your passwords. A home inventory is needed when the house has been burgled or flooded, which is exactly when the laptop is gone.

Everything here is designed to be filled in by hand once and left somewhere findable, which is why the row height is adjustable: handwriting varies more than type does.

Frequently asked questions

Because in an emergency the person who needs the number is often not the person whose phone it is on, and a locked phone is no use to a neighbour, a babysitter or a paramedic. A sheet on the fridge is readable by anyone in the house, works with a flat battery, and does not need a passcode.

The ordinary things, because they are invisible to whoever lives there. Bedtime gets written down; which light stays on, which door sticks, and what the dog does at nine o’clock do not. Those are the things a sitter cannot guess and will not want to ring about.

Because "a scoop" means nothing to someone who has never seen your scoop, and over or underfeeding is the commonest thing to go wrong with a pet sitter. Write the amount and the times, not the routine as you experience it.

Long before you need it. Insurers ask for one after a loss, which is the worst possible moment to compile it from memory. One room per sheet, done slowly across a few evenings, is the version that actually gets finished, and photographs alongside settle a claim faster than a list alone.
