Why placeholder text is Latin

The point of lorem ipsum is that it is unreadable but not obviously fake. English placeholder text gets read — a reviewer will start editing the words instead of looking at the line length. Repeated “Text text text” is read as an error. Scrambled Latin sits in between: it has the right rhythm, roughly the right letter frequencies and word lengths, and no meaning to distract anyone.

Testing the edges, not the average

A layout that works with perfectly average text is not tested. Generate an unusually long block and an unusually short one for the same component and check both:

Does a two-line heading break the vertical rhythm?
Does a one-sentence card collapse next to a five-sentence neighbour?
Does long text overflow, truncate cleanly, or push the layout sideways?
Do line lengths stay in the readable 45–75 character range at every breakpoint?

When to stop using it

Lorem ipsum is a typographic tool, not a content strategy. As soon as the design is being reviewed for meaning rather than shape, replace it — placeholder text conceals whether your headline slot can hold a real headline, and “we will fix the copy later” is how a navigation label ends up as three words when the design assumed one.
