Fractions need a picture

A child who meets fractions only as a pair of numbers learns to move the symbols around without any sense of size. That is why so many can add fractions correctly by rule and still cannot say whether the answer is bigger or smaller than a half. The picture is not a teaching aid to be dropped later; it is the meaning.

Start with circles, move to bars once comparison starts. The bar is also the model that keeps working: it becomes the number line, and then it becomes the way ratios and percentages are drawn.

The equal parts rule

A shape cut into four pieces is not showing quarters unless all four pieces are the same size. This sounds obvious and it is the part most often skipped, including by printed worksheets with hand-drawn diagrams. Every diagram this generator produces divides the shape exactly, because a fraction diagram with unequal parts teaches the wrong thing while looking right.

Frequently asked questions

Because four is bigger than three, and until now every number they have met has worked that way. It is the most common fraction misconception there is, and arguing with it rarely helps. Print the fraction wall instead: seeing a third sitting visibly longer than a quarter settles it in seconds, because the picture contradicts the assumption directly.

Both, for different jobs. Circles match how fractions are first introduced, as parts of one cake or pizza, and they make "one whole" obvious. Bars are far better for comparing and for equivalence, because two bars of equal length can be set directly against each other, which two circles cannot. Start with circles, move to bars when comparison begins.

Naming asks a child to read a picture; shading asks them to produce one. Producing it means deciding how many parts to make, making them equal, and only then counting off the right number. Expect a real gap between the two, and treat trouble with shading as a signal that the idea is not yet secure rather than as carelessness.

Not at first. While the picture is the point, 3/6 is the honest answer to a diagram showing three of six parts shaded, and insisting on 1/2 adds a second skill on top of the one being learned. Turn simplifying on once naming from a diagram is reliable.

Divide. Three quarters is three divided by four, and that is not a clever alternative reading, it is what the notation says. Pointing this out early explains why a fraction and a division answer look so alike, and it stops fractions feeling like a separate topic with its own unrelated rules.
