Shapes are defined by properties, not by looks

The most common problem with shape teaching is that children learn shapes as pictures rather than as definitions. A triangle rotated onto its point stops being a triangle to a child who learned one picture of one. A long thin rectangle stops being a rectangle.

The fix is to count. Three straight sides and three corners makes a triangle whatever angle it sits at, and once a child is counting rather than recognising, orientation stops mattering. That is why the counting sheet here is worth more than the chart.

The shapes, and what to say about each

Patterns are early algebra

Continuing a pattern is finding a rule and applying it, which is exactly what algebra asks for years later with letters attached. The progression matters more than the quantity:

Ask the child to say the pattern aloud as they work. Saying “circle, circle, square” makes the rule audible, and a rule that can be heard is far easier to continue than one that has to be seen.

Yes. A rectangle is any four-sided shape with four right angles, and a square meets that definition with the extra condition that all four sides are equal. A square is also a rhombus. Worksheets that present square and rectangle as separate, unrelated categories teach something that has to be unlearned later.

A five-pointed star has ten sides and ten corners. Children almost always answer five, because they count the points rather than the edges. It is the single most useful shape on a counting sheet for exactly that reason, and pointing along each edge with a finger is what fixes it.

Not mathematically. The shape children call a diamond is a rhombus, which is a four-sided shape with all sides equal, drawn standing on a corner. It is fine to use the everyday word, but worth introducing the real one alongside it.

AB first, then AAB and ABB, then ABC, then AABB. AB is easy because the eye naturally alternates. AAB is genuinely harder for the same reason: the eye wants to alternate and the pattern does not. AABB is the first one that requires holding two counts at the same time.

Because spotting and extending a rule is what algebra is, long before any letters appear. A child continuing an AABB pattern is doing the same thing as one working out the next term in a sequence, and the habit of asking "what is the rule here?" transfers directly.
