Cover letter plan Template
Four paragraphs, in the order that works, planned before a word is typed.
Four steps
How to print a cover letter plan
- 1
Start from this form
Opens on the cover letter plan: Company, Role, Date, One: the job you are applying for, and why this company, Two: the single most relevant thing you have done and the rest.
- 2
Put your own heading on it
Replace "Cover Letter Plan" with a name, a business or a date range.
- 3
Set the row height
13 rows at 6 mm fits more in; 14 mm suits a form filled in by hand.
- 4
Print or save as PDF
Paragraph two, the single most relevant thing you have done is the line to get right.
Who prints this
Anyone whose cover letter keeps turning into a summary of the resume attached below it.
The field that decides whether it works
Paragraph two, the single most relevant thing you have done. If it does not exist for this job, the letter is not what needs fixing.
Why it is laid out this way
Four numbered blocks, each asking a different question, and their sizes are uneven on purpose. The evidence paragraph gets the most room and the closing paragraph gets two lines, which is roughly the ratio a good letter ends up at.
What is on the sheet
6 sections, in this order: Company, Role, Date; One: the job you are applying for, and why this company; Two: the single most relevant thing you have done; Three: what they said they need, and how you match it; Four: what you want to happen next; a note. Set the row height anywhere between 6 and 14 mm across its 13 ruled rows, put your own heading at the top, and find the cover letter plan alongside 4 other forms on the job search templates page.
