How to actually learn the times tables
A chart on the wall is a reference, not a teaching tool. Recall is built by retrieval — trying to remember a fact, failing, and being corrected. That is what the gapped mode is for. Print a chart with 40% of cells blank, time how long it takes to fill, then repeat weekly and watch the time drop.
Increase the blank percentage as the child improves rather than jumping straight to a fully blank grid, which for most learners produces more guessing than recall.
The tricks hiding in the grid
- Symmetry — 7×8 and 8×7 are the same fact. The grid is a mirror image across the highlighted diagonal, so 144 facts are really 78.
- The 9s — the tens digit is always one less than the multiplier, and the two digits always add to 9. 9×7 = 63: 6 is one less than 7, and 6+3 = 9.
- The 11s — up to 9, just double the digit: 11×6 = 66.
- Doubling — the 4s are double the 2s, and the 8s are double the 4s.
- The 5s — always end in 0 or 5, alternating.
Once those are internalised, the genuinely hard facts come down to a handful: 6×7, 6×8, 7×8, 7×9 and 8×9. Target those directly with a flashcard set rather than grinding the whole grid.
Printing advice
A 12×12 chart on A4 portrait gives cells around 15 mm across, which is comfortable for a pencil. Beyond 15×15 switch to A3 or landscape. Print at 100% scale with “Fit to page” disabled so the cells stay square — if the grid comes out slightly rectangular, scaling is the reason.
Laminating the complete chart and using a dry-wipe pen turns one printout into an unlimited supply of practice sheets.
