Paper still has a job

Every school has a digital register, and every teacher has needed a paper one: on a trip, in a fire drill, during a cover lesson, or on the morning the network is down. Those are precisely the situations where knowing exactly who is present matters most, and they are the situations a screen is least likely to help with.

Striped rows are not decoration

Reading one name across thirty-one narrow columns without slipping a row is harder than it sounds, and slipping a row in a register means marking a child present who is not there. The alternating shading exists to stop that, and it is worth leaving on.

Month or week

A month keeps a whole term to three sheets and suits a register that lives in a folder. A week gives columns wide enough to read on a clipboard while walking, which is what a trip needs. Both come from the same class list.
