Alphabet Tracing Worksheets
Printable letter tracing practice for A to Z. Pick a letter, choose capitals, lowercase or both, and print it or save a PDF. The writing lines, the guide darkness and the starting dots are all adjustable, so the same sheet works for a first attempt and for a child who nearly has it.
Four steps
How to make an alphabet tracing worksheet

- 2

Capitals only, lowercase only, or both together.
- 3

Younger children need taller lines, around 24 mm to 32 mm.
- 4
Print it
Print directly or download a PDF to use again later.
Teaching letter formation, briefly
Almost every handwriting difficulty that shows up later starts with the same thing: the pencil beginning in the wrong place. A letter drawn from the bottom up can look perfectly acceptable on the page and still be a problem, because it will not join up when the child comes to write at speed. That is why these sheets mark starting points rather than only showing the finished shape.
Say the stroke out loud while the child writes it. Every letter page on this site includes the words to say, phrased the way a teacher says them, because a spoken instruction is what a four-year-old can follow.
A sensible order to teach letters
Alphabetical order is not the easiest order. Letters made from straight lines are far simpler than letters made from curves, so a common teaching sequence groups them by the movement involved rather than by the alphabet.
| Group | Letters | Why together |
|---|---|---|
| Straight lines | l, i, t, L, I, T, E, F, H | No curves, easiest to control |
| Circles | c, o, a, d, g, q, C, O | All start with the same curve back |
| Bridges | n, m, r, h, b, p | Down, back up, over |
| Slants | v, w, x, y, z, k, A, V, W | Diagonals, hardest to judge |
Every letter, one page each
Each page opens the generator on that letter and adds the stroke instructions, the sound, words beginning with it, and the mix-up it is most often caught in.
