The bug in most word scramble generators

Shuffling a word does not guarantee it changes. A shuffle can return the letters exactly as they started, and on short words it does so often: one time in twenty-four for a four letter word, one in one hundred and twenty for five. Put twenty words on a sheet and it is close to even odds that at least one puzzle is printed as its own answer.

That single unshuffled word costs more than it looks. The child who gets it has learned nothing from it, and usually assumes they have misread something. Every scramble here is compared with the word it came from and reshuffled until it differs, and on the harder setting until the first letter has moved as well.

Choosing the right level of help

Three controls make the same word list easy or hard, and they are worth thinking about separately:

A useful pattern for a mixed class is to print the same words twice, once with a word bank and once without, and hand out whichever suits each child. The answer key is the same for both.

Using your own spellings

Typing a list replaces the built-in words completely, one per line, which is what turns this into a weekly tool rather than a one-off. Two things to keep in mind: skip anything under four letters, because there are too few arrangements to make a puzzle, and be careful with words whose letters can spell something else, since a child who unscrambles them differently is not actually wrong.

No, and this is the one thing a scrambler has to get right. A plain shuffle returns the word unchanged more often than people expect: for a four letter word it is a one in twenty-four chance each time, so on a twenty word sheet it is close to a coin flip that at least one answer is printed as its own puzzle. Every scramble here is checked against the original and reshuffled if it matches.

On the easier setting the first letter may happen to stay where it was, which is a large hint when it does. On the harder setting the first letter is always moved, so there is nothing to anchor a guess to. For most classes the easier setting is right for a first encounter with the words and the harder one for revision.

It depends what you are testing. A word bank changes the task: with one, the child is matching a jumble to a list; without one, they are recalling a word from nothing. Matching suits a younger child, a first meeting with new vocabulary, or a child who would otherwise stall. Recall is the harder and more useful version once the words are familiar.

Yes, and that is what most teachers will want. Type one word per line and it replaces the built-in list entirely, so this week’s spellings become this week’s puzzle. Anything under four letters is best avoided: there are too few arrangements for it to be a puzzle at all.
