Why this range, and why this layout
Twenty is the range that matters in first grade because it forces bridging: 8 + 5 cannot be counted on fingers, so the child has to split the 5 into 2 and 3 and go through ten. That is the actual lesson, and it only appears once the range goes past ten.
Before you print this one
Adding within 10 without counting. If they are still counting up from one, go back to the kindergarten range for a while.
On the layout
Watch for the child who gets 8 + 5 right slowly and 5 + 8 wrong. That is not an arithmetic problem, it is that they have not yet noticed the order does not matter, and it is worth stopping to point out.
When to move on
Once bridging ten is automatic, the next step is not a bigger range but a different layout: two-digit addition stacked in columns, where the skill becomes place value rather than counting.
