Kindergarten Subtraction Worksheets
Taking away within 10, with the larger number always first so nothing goes below zero.
Four steps
How to print kindergarten subtraction worksheets
- 1
Check the range
Opens at 1 to 10, which suits this stage. Move it if one child needs something different.
- 2
Set how many
24 questions a page by default. Fewer for a younger child.
- 3
Keep or drop the key
The answer key prints as its own page.
- 4
Shuffle if you want another
A new sheet at the same settings, so no two children get the same one.
- 5
Print or save as PDF
Plain paper is fine.
Why this range, and why this layout
Every question is arranged so the answer is zero or more. A five year old meeting "3 - 7" has met a genuine mathematical idea years too early, and the usual result is that they decide subtraction is the hard one.
Before you print this one
Comfortable adding within 10. Subtraction is much easier to hold on to once addition is automatic rather than counted.
On the layout
Say it as "seven, take away three" while pointing at the numbers. "Minus" is the symbol’s name, not what the sum means, and children who learn the name first often lose track of the action.
When to move on
Move on when taking away within 10 is as quick as adding within 10, not before. Subtraction lags addition by months in most children and pushing the range up early usually produces guessing rather than progress.
