How to convert kilobytes to megabytes
Multiply the number of kilobytes by 0.001. That is the whole calculation: MB = KB × 0.001. To go back the other way, divide instead, or multiply by 1,000.
Worked example: 12 kilobytes × 0.001 = 0.012 megabytes.
Where this conversion comes up
Digital storage has two competing definitions. Drive manufacturers use decimal units where 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes, while operating systems often display binary units where 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. That difference is why a “1 TB” drive shows up as about 931 GB.
