How to convert gigabytes to megabytes
Multiply the number of gigabytes by 1,000. That is the whole calculation: MB = GB × 1,000. To go back the other way, divide instead, or multiply by 0.001.
Worked example: 12 gigabytes × 1,000 = 12,000 megabytes.
Where this conversion comes up
Digital storage has two competing definitions. Drive manufacturers use decimal units where 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes, while operating systems often display binary units where 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. That difference is why a “1 TB” drive shows up as about 931 GB.
