How to convert litres to millilitres

Multiply the number of litres by 1,000. That is the whole calculation: ml = L × 1,000. To go back the other way, divide instead, or multiply by 0.001.

Worked example: 12 litres × 1,000 = 12,000 millilitres.

Where this conversion comes up

Volume conversions are mostly a cooking problem, and there is a trap: US and imperial measures share names but differ in size. A US pint is 473 ml, an imperial pint is 568 ml. The units here are US measures unless labelled otherwise.

Use ml = L × 1,000. The converter above applies it for you, but the formula is useful in a spreadsheet — put your value in column A and the formula in column B.

The underlying factor is the exact internationally defined value. Results are rounded for readability, so very long decimals are trimmed — but the calculation itself carries full double precision.
