How to convert grams to kilograms

Multiply the number of grams by 0.001. That is the whole calculation: kg = g × 0.001. To go back the other way, divide instead, or multiply by 1,000.

Worked example: 12 grams × 0.001 = 0.012 kilograms.

Where this conversion comes up

Weight conversions come up in cooking, shipping, freight limits and fitness. Recipes are the most common source of confusion, because ingredient weight does not convert to volume — 100 g of flour and 100 g of sugar occupy very different amounts of space.
