What Can This Percentage Calculator Do?

Most percentage problems fall into one of four patterns. This tool handles all of them with clear explanations:

Everyday Uses of Percentage Calculations

Percentages appear in almost every area of daily life. Understanding how to calculate them quickly has real practical value:

How Percentage Formulas Work

The word "percent" comes from Latin per centum, meaning "per hundred." Every percentage is a fraction with 100 as the denominator:

The calculator shows you the formula for every result, so you can verify the math or reuse it in a spreadsheet. For unit conversions alongside numerical work, see the unit converter. For displaying data on paper, the graph paper generator creates coordinate axes for plotting percentage data visually.

Frequently Asked Questions

Divide the smaller number by the larger number and multiply by 100. For example, 45 out of 300 = (45 ÷ 300) × 100 = 15%. Use the "X is what % of Y" mode in this calculator.
Percentage change = ((New Value − Original Value) ÷ |Original Value|) × 100. A positive result is an increase, negative is a decrease. For example, from 80 to 100: ((100 − 80) ÷ 80) × 100 = 25% increase.
A reverse percentage finds the original whole when you know the percentage and the result. For example, if 25% of a number is 75, the original number is 75 ÷ 0.25 = 300.
Divide the number by 5. For example, 20% of 350 = 350 ÷ 5 = 70. Alternatively, divide by 10 (10%) and double it: 35 × 2 = 70.
Percentage points measure the arithmetic difference between two percentages. If interest rates go from 2% to 5%, that is a 3 percentage point increase — but a 150% percentage change. Use percentage points for direct comparisons, percentage change for relative growth.
Yes. Enter any numeric value including decimals (e.g., 3.75, 12.5) and negative numbers. The calculator handles all cases and shows the formula so you can verify the result.
