Why a Printable Camping Checklist Beats a Mental List

Even experienced campers forget things — and in the outdoors, a forgotten headlamp, water filter, or first aid kit can turn an adventure into an emergency. A physical checklist forces you to verify each item systematically rather than relying on memory. Research on pre-flight checklists in aviation shows that written checklists dramatically reduce critical errors even among highly experienced professionals. The same principle applies to trip preparation.

Print this checklist a few days before your trip. As you pack each item into your bag or car, check it off. If you are packing together with a family member, use the "check all" function to mark categories you have already handled, and leave only the remaining categories unchecked. Then toggle off "Show checked items" and download a clean PDF showing only what is still left to pack.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choose General Camping for any standard car-camping trip with a vehicle nearby. Use Backpacking / Hiking if you are carrying everything on your back — this template prioritizes weight and uses ultralight gear. Family Car Camping adds kid-specific items like portable cribs, child sunscreen, safety whistles, and activities. Beach / Summer focuses on sun protection, swimwear, water safety, and sand management. You can switch between templates at any time and your checked items reset automatically.
The General template has about 60 items across 6 categories (Shelter & Sleep, Clothing, Food & Cooking, Safety & Navigation, Personal Care, Documents). Backpacking has 50+ items focused on ultralight gear and Leave No Trace practices. Family Car Camping has 65+ items including a full kids essentials section. Yes. Toggle "Show checked items in printout" off before downloading. This removes already-packed items from the PDF and shows only what is still left to pack — useful for a final walkthrough before departure. With it on, checked items appear with strikethrough text so you can still reference a complete list.
The "Safety & Navigation" category should be packed first — it includes your first aid kit, headlamp, emergency whistle, map, and emergency blanket. These items could save your life in an unexpected situation. Next, ensure shelter (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad) is packed and in good condition before anything else. Food and water come after. Comfort items can be trimmed if weight or space is tight.
A bear canister is a hard-sided, smell-proof container approved by most national parks for food storage. Many wilderness areas in the US (Yosemite, RMNP, etc.) legally require one. Pack all food, snacks, scented toiletries, and trash inside the canister and store it at least 200 feet from camp at night. If you cannot get a canister, a PCT-approved bear bag hang (at least 10 feet off the ground, 4 feet from the trunk) is the alternative. Check your specific area's regulations before the trip.
For most backpacking trips, a filter like the Sawyer Squeeze or Katadyn BeFree provides fast, reliable filtration against bacteria and protozoa. Boiling water (1 minute rolling boil, 3 minutes above 6,500 ft) is the most reliable method but uses fuel. Chemical tablets (iodine, Aquatabs) are lightest but leave a taste and do not work well in cold water. For car camping with access to tap water, just bring enough filled water bottles. At minimum, carry purification tablets as an emergency backup.
The interactive checklist lets you check items online and see real-time progress. To add items not in the template, the simplest approach is to download the SVG and open it in a text editor or design app (Inkscape, Figma, Illustrator) to add your custom lines. Alternatively, print the PDF and handwrite extra items in the blank space at the bottom of each category column.
